Below is an article about a new pet food recall. Some of the pet food brands listed include: Diamond, Wellness, Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover’s Soul, Canidae, Natural Balance, Apex Pet Foods and Kirkland. The article also lists useful sources for finding pet food recalls. We have a pet food recall website listed on our Puptopia resources page as well. With so many pet food brands today, it’s important to check up on pet food recalls periodically.

The AKC has released their list of top breeds of 2011. Labs have once again topped the list, in fact, according to the report, Labrador Retrievers have held the top spot for 21 consecutive years. Some other interesting trends in the report are that larger dogs are increasing in popularity. You can check out the list here: 2011 AKC Top Dog Breeds

Tanner McAuley, the owner of Puptopia, was featured on the season premier episode of Doggie Moms. It’s a clip highlighting pet first aid and shows students being certified in Pet First Aid and CPR by Red Cross. Tanner is the one who says “The pace of New York is very frenetic.” Unfortunately, he wishes that he looked a bit more polished and didn’t wear a hat that day . . . the class was very early in the morning. Lol.
The clip starts at 17:11 and can be viewed here: Puptopia Owner, Tanner McAuley, featured on Doggie Moms.

On Sunday, December 11, I attended the Blessing of the Animals, and I must admit it was quite fun. It was probably one of the most unique animal events I have attended. There was a Rabbi and a Minister blessing all kinds of animals, including: birds, turtles, goats, insects, and of course lots and lots of dogs. It was quite the spectacle! It’s not too often that you witness barking dogs walking down the aisles of a church while the accomplished Brooklyn Youth Chorus’ angelic voices are floating through the cathedral. You can see a picture of me above and pictures of the Minister and Rabbi below. Here is the link for the event: http://www.aspca.org/Aspca-nyc/blessing-of-the-animals.aspx

The following portraits are hysterical, and in some cases, almost frightening. Lol! Photographer, Carli Davidson, shot a variety of dogs shaking water off themselves. The result is a gallery of hilarious photos of contorting dog faces and flying floppy ears.

Now we’ve heard of sheep herding dogs, but this is amazing. A rescued cattle dog named Buddy from Australia has found an unlikely job herding elephants at an elephant sanctuary in Thailand. Unfortunately, the elephant sanctuary has suffered considerable damage due to flooding. To learn more about this incredible dog and how you can help support the sanctuary please click here: Buddy, The Amazing Elephant Herding Dog

Below is an interesting study proving that puppy mills aren’t the healthiest places for puppies to grow up and that they can cause long-term psychological damage to the dogs. This is particulalrly relevant to New Yorkers because there are a number of puppy mills in the city. We always recommend that you buy your puppy from a reputable breeder who is loving and nurturing. Visit breeders beforehand, so you can get to know them and examine the environment in which they raise the puppies. Please do diligent homework when picking a breeder
